Abstract The aim of this article is to reflect on the narrative strategies employed by the naturalist Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira in the “General and particular observations on the class of mammals”, signed in 1790, in order to meet some of the objectives of the Philosophical Journey (1783-1792) through the captaincies of Grão-Pará, Rio Negro e Mato Grosso. From the comparison of texts, we will analyze the choices and textual appropriations made from books and manuscripts consulted during the expedition. In addition, we will also show that the writing presents knowledge that resulted from the naturalist's own observations and appropriations of indigenous knowledge.

Resumo A proposta deste artigo é refletir sobre as estratégias narrativas empregadas pelo naturalista Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira nas “Observações gerais e particulares sobre a classe dos mamais”, assinadas em 1790, de maneira a atender a alguns dos objetivos da Viagem Filosófica (1783-1792) pelas capitanias do Grão-Pará, Rio Negro e Mato Grosso. A partir do cotejamento de textos, analisaremos as escolhas e as apropriações textuais feitas de livros e manuscritos consultados durante a expedição. Além disso, mostraremos também que no escrito se apresentam conhecimentos que foram resultado de observações próprias do naturalista e de apropriações de saberes indígenas.

Resumo No vocabulário das Luzes, ‘economia da natureza’ se relacionava à ideia da existência de um ‘equilíbrio’ entre as diversas partes que compõem o mundo natural. Por sua vez, ‘economia animal’ e ‘economia vegetal’ tinham seus significados ligados ao ‘organismo’ de animais e plantas, respectivamente. Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar como naturalistas luso-americanos (Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira, José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva, Manuel Galvão da Silva e João da Silva Feijó) mobilizaram esses conceitos no exame de aspectos relacionados a realidades locais de diferentes partes do Império português (Reino e colônias) de finais do século XVIII e início do XIX.

Abstract In the vocabulary of the Enlightenment, ‘economy of nature’ was related to the idea of the existence of a ‘balance’ between the different parts that make up the natural world. In turn, ‘animal economy’ and ‘vegetal economy’ had their meanings linked to the ‘organism’ of animals and plants, respectively. This article aims to analyze how Luso-American naturalists (Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira, José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva, Manuel Galvão da Silva, and João da Silva Feijó) mobilized these concepts in examining aspects related to local realities of different parts of the Portuguese Empire (Kingdom and colonies) at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th.
